END OF YEAR UPDATE!

A Message From Our President LUKE DOLAN

Thank you to all our clients and supporters for another successful year!
The end of 2024 is here – the winds of change…can you feel it?

This year was challenging in the building industry to say the least.  Housing starts were down compared to 2023.  However, with recent rate cuts, there is optimism for 2025.

Climate resilience is the latest buzz word floating around the industry.  The continued push to build durable, comfortable, healthy, and resilient homes is stronger than ever.

We’re currently working on some fun projects around this topic, including one with Natural Resources Canada and the LEEP team (Local Energy Efficiency Partnerships). The project is looking at how to tie in climate resilience and energy efficiency, while tackling issues like buildability, housing affordability and future building code changes.

Our CHE team is stronger than ever, with a few fresh faces, like our new rock star Office Manager Emily Miller, and our Kamloops Energy Advisor Josh McLeod (that’s right… we’re now servicing Kamloops and the Central Interior/Okanagan regions of BC).

A big shout out to our Senior Energy Advisor Matheus Alfred-Olmedo, for achieving Master Energy Advisor status.  Otherwise known as MEA – is a new designation from our national association CACEA.  We now have two MEAs on staff, myself and Matheus.

This is the time of year to embrace our freedoms, and to come together to enjoy the holidays.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays.  We look forward to working together in the New Year,

Luke Dolan

Vancouver City Council Advances Zero Emissions Goals

On November 27, 2024, Vancouver City Council reaffirmed its commitment to the 2016 Zero Emissions Building Plan, focusing on electricity use for heating and domestic hot water. This decision followed a multi-day process with over 100 speakers and a staff report addressing previous Council directives.

KEY UPDATES

  • Building Permits: Current requirements under the 2019 Vancouver Building By-law remain in effect until March 1, 2025.

  • Potential changes effective March 1, 2025:

    • Greenhouse gas limits will align with:
      • EL-4 (top level of the BC Zero Carbon Step Code) for 1-3 storey residential buildings.
      • EL-3 (second-highest level) for larger buildings.
  • Natural Gas: Not Permitted for heating or domestic hot water systems through the VBBL Prescriptive Path.  However, cooking and fireplaces are allowed.  Visit the CoV zero emissions buildings page for more info

These updates align with provincial green building policies and strengthen Vancouver’s leadership in sustainable construction
