VBBL Changes to Energy Efficiency Requirements:

Effective February 28th, 2025

The City of Vancouver updated its VBBL energy efficiency requirements for renovations to 1- and 2-family homes. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Renovations valued at >$150,000, or renovation with substantial exterior envelope upgrades: REUP & upgrade existing hot water systems to high-efficiency electric (UEF ≥ 1.0).

  • EnerGuide assessments, will only be required for renovations with renovation value >$250,000.

VBBL Pre-Permit Checklist Updates

Effective: March 1, 2025

Starting March 1, 2025, updates to the Vancouver Building By-law will require all new permit applications for 1–3 storey residential buildings to meet new greenhouse gas emission requirements. These changes align with the top level (EL-4) of the Zero Carbon Step Code and are outlined in the new Table 10.2.2.5.A3 below. The Pre-Permit Checklist has also been updated.

Our General Manager, Tommy Byun, got to attend the awards and had the pleasure of presenting the Best Energy Labeled Home Production to Diamond Head Development. for the project we featured in Finch Dr, Squamish! They also won Best Environmental Initiative for the same project!

We are also very proud to have worked with RDC Fine Homes on the project that Capital Home Energy was involved with, which won the Best Kitchen Reno under $200K; and

Twin Lions Contacting who won for Best Energy Labeled Whole House Renovation & Custom Home valued $2M – 3M (and many more!)
