DEFINITION OF THE MONTH

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

Also known as SHGC – Solar heat gain co-efficient is a ratio or percentage of solar radiation allowed trough the glazing unit. It is represented in a number from 0 to 1. The lower the number, the less solar radiation is allowed through the glass. The higher the number, the more solar radiation is allowed through the glass.

Example: if you are building a home in Kelowna with southwest facing views, the glass should have a very low SHGC of 0.20 or less. High-rise buildings in big cities like Vancouver will have a very low  SHGC of 0.05, therefor keeping the occupants much more comfortable in the summer months.
