We’re pleased to showcase another Net Zero retrofit, for this month’s featured project. Here is the first CHBA Net Zero Renovation in North Vancouver that we recently completed.
This deep energy retrofit was built by Twin Lions Contracting, a local high performance top quality North Shore builder. And designed by Mark Kerschbaumer out of Squamish BC.
This home was also the first CHBA Net Zero renovation label that we, at Capital Home Energy, issued under our new license as a CHBA Net Zero Service Organization.
The house was as expected for a 1958 home. Single glazed windows, 2×4 R-8 walls, and drafty (9.37 ACH to be exact). It is great to see the outcome and Net Zero target achieved. Well done Twin Lions for pushing this through to the finish line!
This was an exciting project to work on and involved a great deal of planning and design.
Some project highlights include:
- Increased basement insulation from nothing to an average R-22
- Increased wall insulation from R-8 to R-24
- Increased attic insulation from R-24 to R-60
- Upgraded windows from single glazed to triple glazed with USI 0.97-0.91 SHGC 0.16
- Heating system upgraded to cold climate air source heat pump
- Domestic hot water upgraded to a Rheem hybrid electric integrated heat pump hot water tank
- Ventilation upgraded to HRV 81% SRE @ 0 degree C (balanced ventilation)
- Air tightness improved from 9.37 ACH to 1.08 ACH
- Solar PV System: 27 panels, 570 ft² array size,
43 GJ/year (12,023 kWh) estimated on site renewable energy contribution
