Net Zero Home in Qualicum Beach, BC

We’re proud to showcase this month’s high-performance home from Don May Construction in beautiful Qualicum Beach, on Vancouver Island.  This CHBA Net Zero Labeled Home produces as much on site renewable energy (solar PV) as it consumes, on an annual basis.  Net Zero homes are best in class for Canadian home labeling programs, and its important to note that all homes in BC by 2030 will be built to a Net Zero Ready Standard:

  • Foundation walls: Effective R-18
  • Main walls: 2” Exterior EPS rigid insulation + 2×6 R-24 Batt
    Effective R-27
  • Vaulted roof: Effective R-50
  • Windows – High Performance Triple glazed
  • Air Tightness 1.02 ACH (air changes per hour- that’s very tight!)
  • HRV 70% Sensible recovery efficiency
  • Ductless mini-split – Air Source Heat Pump for heating and cooling
  • Hybrid Electric heat pump hot water tank – Rheem
  • Renewable production – Solar PV array 38 GJ/yr
    (GJ = Gigajoules)

Net Zero Ready Alternative Compliance for Mid-Density Housing Forms

The Net Zero Program is working on a research project and is looking for participation from builders.

This project is targeting mid-density and multi-family homes that struggle to meet the existing Net Zero Program’s energy generation requirements where sufficient on-site renewable energy generation is not feasible. The goal of the project is to broaden the Net Zero Program’s reach allowing more mid-density homes to label under the Program via an alternative Net Zero Ready compliance path.

Metro Vancouver: Clean Air Plan

The draft Clean Air Plan is open for comment!

Metro Vancouver’s draft 2021 Clean Air Plan is the regional plan for managing air quality and greenhouse gases over the next 10 years. Actions in the plan will reduce air contaminant emissions, including greenhouse gases, and support the commitment to a carbon neutral region by 2050. The Clean Air Plan will also help improve air quality in the region.

The Clean Air Plan includes three regional targets for 2030:

  • Reduce GHGs by 45% from 2010 levels;
  • Ensure ambient air quality meets or is better than objectives and standards set by Metro Vancouver, and the BC and federal governments; and
  • Increase the amount of time that visual air quality is classified as excellent.
