FEATURED PROJECT

Step 4 Home in Whistler, BC

For this month’s featured project, we wanted to showcase this beautiful mountain home in Whistler, built by Sitka Whistler Construction Ltd. This is a high performance home with an exterior air barrier and prefab SIP (structural insulated panel) walls, meeting Step 4 of the BC Energy Step Code.

The final air tightness score was 0.94 ACH (air changes per hour).

Other house characteristics include:

  • Above Grade Wall: 2.5″ R-10 Mineral Wool exterior insulation + R35.9 Structural insulated panels (SIPs)
  • Below Grade Wall 1: R-22 ICF
  • Below Grade Wall 2: Interior framing spaced out at 24″ o/c to minimize thermal bridging
  • Triple-glazing windows with USI values ranging from 0.96-1.3, and USI 1.1 for the skylight windows
  • Taped exterior plywood sheathing with high performance SIGA tape

This build showcases how beautiful it is to build energy efficient homes.

DEFINITION OF THE MONTH

EnerGuide Rating System (ERS)

The EnerGuide Rating System is a national system developed by Natural Resources Canada to rate the energy performance of houses.

The Rating System is designed to achieve the following:

  • help Canadian homeowners, industry and stakeholders, become “energy literate” regarding homes and the decisions related to them;
  • provide specific, readily accessible energy performance information that is widely used to support decision making in designing, constructing, purchasing, renovating or operating a home; and
  • facilitate energy performance advancements in new and existing low-rise housing sectors by encouraging home builders and homeowners to improve the houses that they live in, build or renovate. This should lower operating costs, increase occupant comfort and reduce the environmental impact of housing energy use in Canada.

Please remember to book your mid construction and final tests at least two weeks in advance!

Friendly reminder to all builders needing to book their mid construction and final blower door tests. Please give us a call two weeks in advance to ensure we can have you on the schedule and to ensure a quicker turnaround time for your reports! We recommend contacting us for your mid construction test when insulation has started.
