CHBA Net Zero Renovation Pilot Project
|
|
|
This month, we are featuring a CHBA Net Zero Renovation Pilot project we worked on.
Renovated by RDC Fine Homes, and located in Birken BC (Climate Zone 6), this house is the first in BC to participate in the Net Zero Renovation Pilot, and second in Canada!
By participating in the Net Zero Reno Pilot, this home was renovated to be Net Zero ready. The homeowners have future proofed their investment as all homes in BC will be built to a Net Zero Ready or Step 5 level by 2032.
We just finalized the post-renovation energy model with a great airtightness score of 1.34 ACH at 50 Pa
Characteristics of this house include:
• Triple-glazed USI 0.79 – 0.85, SHGC 0.15 and 0.16 windows
• 2″ Neopor rigid foam, 2×4 @16″ o/c R-14 Batt walls
• 2×4 @ 16″ o/c R-14 Batt and R-60 blown-in cellulose ceiling
• 8″ concrete, R-22 2 lb spray foam foundation
• HRV (heat recovery ventilation) supplying fresh air and exhausting stale indoor air

Changes to Step Code for building new homes in North Vancouver
|
|
By mid next year, Part 9 buildings will move from Step 3 to Step 5 of the BC Energy Step Code, but the city has also included an option to enhance Step 3.
The changes will mean transitioning from natural gas heating systems to low carbon heating systems in the construction of new small residential buildings starting in the middle of next year.
According to the report released by the city council, making the switch is estimated to result in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of over 1,500 tonnes, the equivalent of taking almost 500 passenger vehicles off the road over the next 30 years.
This latest change will see requirements for simple buildings – three storeys and under – including single-family homes, duplexes, coach homes and some townhouses move from Step 3 to Step 5, the highest step, which is similar to a net zero building performance.
The bylaw will require that low carbon energy system homes meet an overall greenhouse gas intensity limit of 3 kg CO₂ e/m²/year for the building, and the city is allowing builders the flexibility to choose how they do this.
“The GHGI limit can be met in a number of ways and staff expect that some builders will choose to install air-to-air heat pumps or air-to-water heat pumps, while others may choose to install electric baseboards,” the report stated.

Vancouver City Council approves five-year Climate Emergency Action Plan
|
|
|
The Vancouver City Council recently approved a roadmap to dramatically reduce climate emissions and guide next steps that set Vancouver on an ambitious path to achieve its target to reduce Vancouver’s carbon pollution by 50% by 2030.
Of the 19 actions in the Climate Emergency Action Plan, four ‘game changer’ actions were identified to significantly move the dial on reducing carbon pollution from the city’s largest sources – buildings and transportation – which represent nearly all of the carbon pollution produced in Vancouver.
The game changer actions are:
- Transport pricing to reduce congestion and reallocate road space to more sustainable modes and increase walking, rolling, cycling, and transit use
- Expanding residential on-street parking programs city-wide, with a carbon surcharge on new, higher priced, gas and diesel vehicles
- Setting carbon pollution limits for existing buildings to transition older buildings off fossil fuels by improving energy efficiency and switching to renewable energy
- Setting requirements for low carbon construction materials and practices in new buildings to reduce the embodied carbon from building construction
