What is EnerGuide?
The EnerGuide Rating System is a national program run by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). This rating is a standard way to measure a home’s energy performance.
The ERS provides independent, third-party energy efficiency advice. Reducing the amount of energy that Canadians use in their homes is part of Canada’s climate-change solution. The goal is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This should help improve our environment. While also repair previous damages inflicted by our negligent use of resources and energy.

How Does it Work?
Our team starts with a copy of your house plans. We use energy modelling software hot2000. Our advisors have the capabilities to simulate multiple scenarios for energy efficient building methods and systems. While also giving feed back on insulation levels, windows and doors, and mechanical systems. Altogether our experts have a clear idea of the best home improvements to proceed with. Above all, the goal is to maximize your EnerGuide rating. While helping to reduce energy consumption and stay within your budget!
After construction has started, we highly recommend engaging Capital Home Energy to conduct a blower door airtightness test. The test will help to identify air leakage locations in your home. Not only is this the best time to do this test, its is also a requirement of the Step Code.
Airtightness tests also determines the ACH (air changes per hour). Basically this indicates how air tight or drafty the home is. Afterwards you will get a detailed report. As a result, the report highlights problem areas. Before drywall is installed, this is of course the time to fix any air leakage deficiencies.
When the home is complete, its time for the final blower door airtightness test before occupancy. This final site verification will be used to gather information required for the final EnerGuide report. Additionally this indicates whether the home qualifies for EnerGuide certification. In some cases, an EnerGuide certification is also required as a part of the CHBA Net-Zero program.

Understanding EnerGuide Ratings.
In April 2016, a new EnerGuide Rating System (ERS V15) was introduced to British Columbia.
The EnerGuide Rating is based on total energy consumption, stated in gigajoules (GJ) per year. Comparatively the aim is to find out how much energy is consumed in the home, determined by using standard operating conditions and total energy consumption. This calculated by subtracting the annual renewable energy contributions from the annual energy consumption. Therefore, the lower the EnerGuide Rating, the better the home’s score. Homes that have a rating of zero would be considered Net Zero.
Consequently at the end of the project, you are left with an energy efficient, healthy home. The increased resale value of homes with a good EnerGuide Rating is an additional benefit. There are rebates available from FortisBC New Home Rebate Program as well.
