Homes that produce as much onsite renewable energy as they consume on an annual basis.
What are CHBA Net Zero Reno Homes?
CHBA Net-Zero Homes are home designed, modelled, and constructed to produce just as much renewable energy as they consume annually. Net-Zero reno homes are have typically been renovated to meet the Net Zero Reno standard. To put this into perspective, the EnerGuide score for a Net-Zero house would be 0 GJ (gigajoules) per year, measuring the natural gas energy content. Comparing this to an average home score, Net-Zero homes are 8 times more efficient than average homes.
The Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) launched the first Net-Zero labeling program in May 2017. The program provides both consumers and industry figures with clear requirements for Net-Zero requirements and identifies the builders and renovators who provide them. For more information on this program, visit the official CHBA Net-Zero page!
Since CHBA Net-Zero Homes are built to higher standards than conventional homes, they are extremely air-tight and well insulated. Certified Net-Zero homes are extremely comfortable for your family or tenants and creates a more durable, sustainable house. Net-Zero houses have lower greenhouse gas emission ratings, which continues to contribute to British Columbia’s reduced emission targets and helps maintain a better environment for our local communities and wildlife.

LEEP Trial Homes For Renovation
Receive up to $7,000 in grant funding. A great opportunity for your Net Zero Reno project.
The LEEP Trial Homes for Renovation Program facilitates innovative and deep energy residential retrofits in British Columbia. Deep energy retrofits go beyond a single system upgrade (like the HVAC system or windows) and incorporate whole home solutions that result in reduced energy consumption, peak power use, and greenhouse gas emissions.
Participants gain access to design supports and Energy Concierge services to facilitate and implement deep energy retrofit field trial projects. The program will support 20 projects throughout the design and construction phases of the retrofit.

Towards Net Zero Reno Initiative – funding available
The Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) is working with our Energy Advisors, Renovators, Architects, Designers and Home Owners to make Net Zero renos energy more achievable:
- Providing support to Energy Advisors, Renovators, and Homeowners in the Planning, Implementation, and Verification of CHBA Net Zero Renovation Projects
- Encouraging strong roots in the development and expansion of the Net Zero Renovation community by providing the industry with opportunities to learn and get involved with our Qualified Net Zero Energy Advisors and Renovators
There is of course financial support available for the project to be undertaken from start to finish for projects meeting the minimum requirements OR up to the point that a project is determined to no longer be a candidate.
Eligible coverage is for professional services for both “Core” and “Supportive” tasks:
Net Zero reno – How does it work ?
As energy advisors, we provide energy modelling for existing homes and we can ensure your home meets the Net Zero renos target! Our team of experts implements the best energy solutions for building design, ensuring all components are integrated as a total home energy solution. When all components of an energy efficiency optimized home work in synergy, achieving the energy standards needed to be labelled as Net-Zero is easily attainable.
Deep energy retrofits are ideal candidates for Net Zero renos. And it’s a fairly straightforward process:
Phase 1, design:
- Pre-retrofit energy evaluation
- Energy Model the proposed renovation
- Optimize for energy efficient that fits your buget
- Ensure Net Zero renos targets are feasible
- Create a pathway for Net Zero or Net Zero ready
- Enroll the project for Net Zero/ready
- Start the renovation
Phase 2, mid construction:
- on site air tightness testing of the home (pre-drywall)
- Identify air leakage spots
- Ensure the project is achieving the target of 1.5 ACH (air changes per hour)
- Ensure the project is still on track to meet Net Zero
Phase 3, final completion:
- Final Blower Door air tightness Testing
- Site inspection, data collection of mechanical, ventilation, hot water specs
- Final “As Built” BC Energy Step Code compliance reports
- Final EnerGuide House Reports and Label
- CHBA Net Zero renos label
CHBA Net-Zero Ready
Homes are built, designed, energy modelled and tested to meet the Net Zero standard, but have not installed the renewable energy yet.
These homes are designed and equipped with the necessary components and features to transition into a renewable energy power supply!
